Mayhem, Norway’s sensational black metal artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Saint Andrews Hall!
The band was formed in Oslo (Norway) in by guitarist Øystein Aarseth (known initially as Destructor and later, Euronymous), bassist Jørn Stubberud aka Necrobutcher and drummer Kjetil Manheim. Their musical style falls under the category of black metal (an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music, featuring fast tempos, a shrieking vocal style, heavily distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, lo if recording, and unconventional song structures) and they cite Venom, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Bathory, and Celtic Frost as their main influences. They named the band after the Venom song Mayhem with Mercy and released their first demo tape (Pure Fucking Armageddon) in 1986. The band’s been through many line up changes since then and it currently consists of Necrobutcher (bass), Hellhammer (drums, percussion), Attila Csihar (vocals), Teloch (guitars), and Ghul (guitars). They’ve had a stellar career with 5 studio albums, 5 live albums, 3 compilation albums, 4 video albums, 2 extended plays, 2 singles, and they’ve performed with other death metal acts such as Watain and Revenge. Their debut album (De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas) is considered a black metal classic and their 2007 album (Ordo Ad Chao) won the Spellemannprisen award for Best Metal Album. They’re widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal.
