Matisyahu (birth name Matthew Paul Miller) was born in West Chester (Pennsylvania) in 1979 and is a reggae vocalist, beatboxer, and alternative hip hop artist. His stage name is Hebrew for ‘gift of god’ and he’s made a name for himself by blending orthodox jewish themes with his music. His musical style combines contemporary reggae, rap, beatboxing, and hip hop with the more traditional vocal disciplines of jazz's scat singing and judaism's hazzan style of song based prayer. When he tours, he’s joined by Brooklyn based dub/rock crossover band Dub Trio, consisting of Stu Brooks (bass guitar), Joe Tomino (drums), and D.P. Holmes (guitar). He’s had a stellar career with 5 studio albums, 4 live albums, 1 compilation album, 3 extended plays, 20 singles, and 2 remix albums. He’s collaborated with many renowned artists such as Collie Buddz, The Crystal Method, DeScribe, The Dirty Heads, Nosson Zand, Moshav, Cisco Adler, Adel Tawil, and Radical Something. He’s also starred in the 2010 independent film A Buddy Story and in the 2012 supernatural horror film The Possession. He won Esquire Magazine’s 2006 Esky Music Award for Most Loveable Oddball and labelled him “the most intriguing reggae artist in the world”.
