Fetty Wap (birth name Willie Maxwell II) was born in Paterson (New Jersey) in 1991 and is a rapper and songwriter. He formed his stage name by prefixing Wap (a tribute to rapper Gucci Mane's alias, GuWop) with Fetty (a slang for money). His musical style is best described as a blend of gangsta rap (a subgenre of hip hop music - pioneered in the mid-1980s by rappers such as Schoolly D and Ice-T, and was popularized in the later part of the 1980s by groups like N.W.A - with themes and lyrics that generally emphasize the criminal gang lifestyle), hardcore rap (a genre characterized by confrontation and aggression, whether in the lyrical subject matter, the hard, driving beats, the noisy sampling and production, or any combination thereof), and trap. He's had a stellar career with 1 studio album (a #1 hit on both the US Billboard 200 and Billboard's Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums charts), 1 extended play, 24 singles, and 5 mix tapes. He's received many accolades including a MTV Video Music Award (for Artist to Watch), a BET Hip Hop Award, an iHeartRadio Music Award (for Best New Artist), and a Billboard Music Award (for Top New Artist).
