The Afghan Whigs were formed in Cincinnati in Greg Dulli (vocals and rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), John Curley (bass), and Steve Earle (drums). While their musical style can be broadly classified as indie rock (a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s, encapsulating the genres chamber pop, indie pop, lo fi, math rock, neo psychedelia, post punk revival, sadcore, and shoegazing), it also includes elements of soul and blues (a genre – developed by by African Americans in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century – incorporating spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads). The band’s been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Greg Dulli, John Curley, Rick G. Nelson, Dave Rosser, Jon Skibic, and Patrick Keeler. They’ve had a stellar career with 7 studio albums, 2 compilation albums, 12 music videos, 5 extended plays, and 14 singles. The Afghan Whigs have been a significant influence on many bands including The National, The Gaslight Anthem, The Horrible Crowes, Interpol, The Hold Steady, My Chemical Romance, and Jimmy Eat World.
